  • Fall is commmming !!! (excited for no reason) – it’s time to take out our hats, jackets, and light coats that fly at the first gust of wind.

These kinds of coats are my mid-season favorites. For a lot of my friends, it’s the biker jacket – worn effortlessly over the shoulders – for others it’s a simple blazer… What’s your favorite ?

  • A pair of jeans, a t-shirt, a hat and a kimono – I like the idea for September and the chillier days. I’ve been looking for a light coat for a while, something that dresses up a simple outfit and is not a blazer.

In the picture is Diane Birch, a singer I really like and I saw on Friday in Brooklyn – these kind of encounters keep the idea that Brooklyn is full of stylish artists and creatives alive…

  • I spotted Sue on the street the other day and really liked her look. But also, I really loved her bag. Isn’t it cool? I asked her how it came about…

“I actually started putting patches on my bag after seeing a cool patched vest on St Mark’s. It was too expensive for me to buy, so I thought, ‘What do I already have that I can put patches on?’ My bag, which I bought for myself for high school graduation, instantly came to mind. I put my name on the front in varsity letters and added a few other small patches and pins that I liked to start. After that, people started giving me patches for my bag, and I started picking them up everywhere I went. Each one is special and reminds me of a place, person, or memory I loved. It gets a lot of attention, both positive and negative, but neither matters to me. With every patch it becomes more mine. Hence its (perfect) nickname: the Souis Vuitton.” - Sue

  • Summer Still

    Posted on garancedore.fr July 30 2013, 8:46pm

  • Alex did an interview yesterday with a skincare professional about sunscreens (yeah, we’re already right smack dab in the middle of summer which is why we have, give or take, 200 questions)(We’ll publish them all at the beginning of next week, promise!) and one of the things that really got me that we learned the most from is that your best friend for protecting your skin from the sun, besides sunblock…

Is wearing a hat. A hat. You really need one for summer. It’s not just something to look cute in anymore, but a shield to guard you against the mean and terrible UVA-UVBs. So that’s an interesting enough thing to know, but I have to say that out and about, on the streets, I see a minority of woman who have hats on… And I get it. Hats are not the most practical thing… a gush a wind and you find yourself running after it, and it’s hard to find one that looks right (even if I do think that everyone can find some kind of hat that works for her), oh also, I don’t know about you, but I forget them everywhere. So there’s my new thing: I’m going to try to get in the habit of having a hat whenever I leave the house in the summer sun. What about you all? Are you going to be hat converts with me?

  • Here are two or three things I’m bringing to Bali. Simple things that I’ve had for years and others that have recently found their way into my rotation, like my summer pajamas by Sea that I just love, this Carioca bathing suit (a Corsican brand that I told you about here), neither of which are too pricey and can go with anything…

Some yoga outfits, a few t-shirts, my Rondinis that have had quite a few wearings (I’ve worn them every summer since I bought them, oh and their color has changed*!), a super light white linen dress, some shorts I can romp around in on my bike… So, maybe I’ll end up adding a few more things (I always toss in an extra 500 pounds of “just in case” stuff at the last second) – but these are my essentials!!! ————- *An entire bottle of oil broke in my bag last time and the weird part is… my Rondinis literally absorbed all of it. Check it out: 1/ They totally changed color. 2/ They protected the rest of my bag, a save I’ll never forget. 3/ They smell like Monoi from a mile away! Military Hat, Vintage; Sunglasses, Barton Perreira; Bracelet, Maiyet, Swimsuit, Carioca; Scarf, Bungalow 8; Dress, J.Crew; Passport Cover, Smythson; Travel Products, Aesop; Pajamas, Sea; Notebook + Pen, Muji; Necklace, Aurélie Bidermann; Sandals, Rondini; Shirts, Everlane; Yoga Top, Garbe Luxe; Shoes, Sperry x Jeffrey; Shorts, RRL.

    Pour Bali!

  • Yes!!! Yeeeeeyyyyy!!!!!!! Summer is finally here! As I’m still in the city, I’m engaged in a full out pool hunt. It’s great to get away for a few hours. On Saturday, I spent the afternoon with a friend laying out in the sun on the deck of Chelsea Piers right on the Hudson and honestly, I couldn’t have been happier. And Friday, I went to the pool (yeah, I swear, it’s not the beach you see. It’s a pool with sand in New York, right nearby my apartment at the Dream Hotel) with Lauren because I wanted to get some photos of my favorite bathing suits of the moment so I could talk to you about them…

As summer starts, I always lean toward simplicity. That’s why they’re black, chic, and perfect for feeling cool as summer begins (you know, when you’re a little less tan and you feel totally bizarre getting out of the pool right in front of everyone, like me on Saturday? Yeah. That.)(Later on, I’ll show you my favorite beach goddess suits if you’d like)(you know, when it’s toward the end of summer and you feel like being a bathing suit is your natural state and you can’t quite figure out how to put a pair of jeans on?) so for now, swimsuits that draw attention to drama-less areas.

1: I love the top, super flattering, and the non-straps make tanning way better in this strange land where topless is illegal.

2: I love this one piece. It’s sexy and chic at the same time, like I would totally see Romy Schneider wearing it and everything Romy would wear is good in my book, and on top of that the one-strap has been my go to since last summer.

All right I agree with you, and as far as tan lines go, they’re hell. You definitely have to take the strap down and say goodbye to the idea of a well-tanned tummy (if you’re in the US at least. In France, I would roll it), but outside of these few small annoyances, there’s nothing more elegant than this one.

3: The back is so awesome!!! Right? So cool that even the tan line would be cool, like an awesome tattoo. Or am I going too far?

Voilà!!! What’s your favorite? — Oh, and: #1 Norma Kamali, #2 Shimmi, #3 ASOS Thank you to the Dream Hotel for making us feel we were at the beach in the middle of New York! Click on the arrows to see more swimsuit images… Translation : Tim Sullivan

  • I met Benns while we were both shopping on H&M’s new store & Other stories. I ask her if I could take her a picture and she kindly accepted. It was really challenging to take her photo while I was trying to keep an eye on my 2 year son Noah. He actually behave really good, so I might have a new assistant. • If I had the choice, I wouldn’t be wearing hats right now, seeing as they are one of the casualties of my wardrobe overhaul. Oh, and thanks to my keratin treatment, I finally love my hair! (Most of the time) (I mean, you have to hate your hair at least once or twice a week, right?) But, consider my absolute sun paranoia, I have to protect my skin from harmful rays, like when I take my bike out in Central Park…

SO, I have to wear something on this little head of mine. It’s gotta be either a cap or a hat. Cap or hat. Cap or hat… Hmmmmm. What do you think, cap or hat? (Tim says “WEAR A HELMET!!! @&%€!!!” and he’s right. So, let’s say, when I take a stroll through Central Park) (I have a leather visor as well, which absolutely deserves its own minipost, just so you can explain to me why everyone cracks up every time I wear it.) (While you wait for it, here are pictures of cap OR hat)(nobody said you have to wear your hat like a high-top hat like the dumbo in the picture – I do that when I feel ghetto) (so stupid, I know) (nonetheless true!)

Which would you choose? How do you cover you head in the summer? Cap or Hat? Translation : Tim Sullivan

  • My friend Violaine is pregnant (Yeeeey!!!), and all her outfits are so simple and cool that it gives you the feeling that figuring out what to wear when your belly is round is the easiest thing in the world.

Which isn’t true at all, even if Violaine, being naturally thin and can still wear most of her old outfits, there are still a few things that you really can’t avoid. Like maternity jeans for example. These ones are from J Brand and what is funny is that in the beginning, Violaine didn’t even want to hear about it.

It’s funny, I think it’s happened three times now where friends swear that they’ll never walk through the doors of a maternity shop (I don’t know why?) and then finally end up cracking and buying maternity jeans. They put those jeans on and feel alive again.

    Interlude I love her shoes.

Voilà!!! Big hugs to Violaine and to all the little babies out there!!! (???) Translation : Tim Sullivan

  • Sometimes, there are clothes that I like so much that I want to show you them on someone. (Not on me, because that’s not really my thing, and I don’t know how to do the whole selfie thing.) And sometimes, there are models who I really like that I meet on shoots or castings or in the street, and that I don’t really know how to talk to you about them (And I’d actually love to have some sort of “model” section to tell you about my model crushes). And then BAM! Two birds, one stone.

So here’s Flo, an adorable Argentine who just got to New York with the most amazing energy, wearing my favorite t-shirt of the season – a Phillip Lim tee from his grunge collection that makes me want to go back to the 90′s, and fast. Since I’m sure your mouth is watering just like mine, here’s the video from the show. SERIOUSLY now…. THAT MUSIC!!!

  • How do you dress when the weather is disgusting? Ok, we got it – what we’re going to find in the streets during the shows won’t give us an answer. During the shows, it seems like everyone is having a great time defying the weather. Not necessarily in terms of temperature – don’t be fooled by these snowstorm pictures… It’s not so cold in Milan, which explains why the snow coming down on us is all wet and turns to slush the second it hits the ground and makes my life a fight against the elements. It’s also why on all my photos today, people seem to be rather lightly dressed. But what they do is defy the weather in terms of colors. Why didn’t anyone send me the memo?

Because personally, yesterday morning I… Freshly showered (= rolled out of bed, three hours

in the shower later I finally remember that I’m in Milan), put on my white pants with a smile before heading down for my breakfast of fruit and cereal (+ a chocolate croissant, an Italian specialty that I recommend you never try because it’s just too damn good), and open my iPad (=2% battery left. Why is the world against me this morning?) and I see that it’s going to be wintry mixing all morning. Of course, because I have some common sense, I finish my breakfast, head back up to my room and put on an entirely grey outfit. Grey jeans, black sweater, grey coat. Grey, grey, greeeeeeyyyy like the sky in Milan. Everyone would do the same, right? Apparently not!

I like outfits that bite their thumb at the weather a little. They just put me in a good mood. Because fashion is for that too, lifting our spirits when skies are grey. I promise to wear my white jeans today, whether it’s raining or snowing or wintry mixing or whatever it is. Who cares if the bottom of my pants gets stained? From there, big hugs to you all!!! Screw you greyishness!!!

  • You know that I’ve always loved Emmanuelle Alt’s style. This very very French, extremely chic discretion. Even when I try to explore different style areas (not aaaaalways for the best, ooooh no) when I really need inspiration I always come back to pictures of her. This season, Emmanuelle is still wearing a lot of neutral tones and blacks, but I love the femininity and coolitude of these belted jackets.

Oh man, when she showed it to me, said, “Oh that’s so cool! Let’s do a video to show how to do it on the blog!”

And so here you go! A little DIY if you have nothing on the docket for this weekend, inspired by the awesome hat I showed you yesterday. I hope you like it!!! PS: The hat is from American Apparel and the jewels are from M&J Trimming!

Every woman should have a wooly hat for those bad hair days. I’ve been wearing them quite a lot so people probably think I always have bad hair days, but I just think they are really cool as well. - Jourdan Dunn, backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

  • Here are some photos I took one day before the storm locked me inside without electricity or internet. Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal for us compared with how much damage Sandy caused elsewhere, but it was a little weird to be locked up at home with no idea what was going on in the rest of the world. I’ll tell you all about it in more detail later on. In the meantime, here’s a photo of Emily with the coolest outfit. I love it because everything about it is in the details…

The red lips. The beanie (even if beanies never work on me and always make my head itch. I can never keep them on for more than a half hour). The white shirt. And of course, the zipper up the back. Soooo cool. Translation : Tim Sullivan

    A Detail

    Posted on garancedore.fr October 31 2012, 12:19pm

  • Every time when I see a stylish person on the street I stop him or her and ask if I could take a picture. Then I spend a couple of minutes asking them where the clothes are from. That’s the usual process. And then there are the fashion weeks. A whole different story. During fashion week people’s time is very limited. Either they arrive late to a show, so there is no time to get their cloth details, or you don’t want to miss taking a picture of someone else. But don’t worry, I did get the details of a whole bunch of fashionistas. I also noticed that there were two brands that the people that I photographed kept repeating. One was MSGM (that deserves another post) and Kenzo. The Kenzo logo was everywhere! T-shirts, hats, jumpers and of course the famous sweaters. The sweaters were without a doubt the “it” garment of the past fashion weeks. You could see them in all colors but the most wanted was the green one with the tiger. The sweater is priced at 190 EUR, which I don´t think is a lot. However, I have already seen it too many times at the fashion weeks, so I am kind of saturated. If I was to buy it, I would go for the burgundy one. Which one do you like? By the way, if you want to know more about the last season fashion week do not miss this Q&A that Tamara made for her blog It Hunter.

  • This weekend is the last one before back to school. New York fashion week is starting next week (Arrrrgh ! So early !) and you can already feel the electricity…

So this weekend, this looong Labor Day weekend (here, Monday is a holiday) is one of the most delicious and most nostalgic of the year. What we love to do is to stay in the city, hop on our bikes and visit neighborhoods we don’t know, new restaurants, go up to Central Park, cross the bridges and go thrift shopping in Brooklyn, end up totally drunk at the Wythe Hotel, looking out at the skyline… On a bike, the city is yours. Have a great weekend !!! PS : In the picture, Nista has the perfect biking outfit : A hat (and don’t forget to wear sunblock) a messenger bag – Ok, kind of, a Proenza Schouler PS1 – shorts, and flats.

  • And here is the Rio city guide of Joana, my favorite Carioca ! How would you describe Rio to someone who has never been? Rio has some kind of magic that is difficult to explain. It has something to do with the atmosphere here. I’m not sure if it comes from the people, the mountains or from the sea. But it is a city with its own rhythm. It is all about the Carioca (a native of Rio) life style. To be a Carioca is to be happy about life, to feel free and be authentic. There are two kinds of Cariocas, the ones who are born here, and the ones who come to visit and take Rio in their hearts when they leave.

Whats your favorite date spot? A romantic breakfast at La Bicyclette inside the Botanic Garden, or a weekend at the Relais de Marambaia. The best place for a night out dancing with girlfriends? Londra at the Fasano, Samba de Santa Clara and Rio Scenarium for typical Brazilian Music. The new super cool restaurant? Irajá, a small cool restaurant at Botafogo. Viera Souto, situated at a house in front of Ipanema Beach. And Ristorante Alloro the new restaurant at the Meridien Hotel at Copacabana Beach. The best old and chic restaurant? Antiquarius, the best Portuguese food ever! Try the Picadinho Carioca, a very typical dish. And the traditional Cipriani where you have dinner facing the beautiful swimming pool of the Copacabana Palace Hotel . Where can you get the best caipirinha? At Azul Marinho, watching the sun set at Arpoador. What are the Brazilian foods you must try: Açaí, Tapioca, pão de queijo (cheese bread), Feijoada (a beans dish), rodízio barbecue and brigadeiro (a chocolate dessert).  What is the best way to get around your city–bike, bus or car? Bike. Rio has more than 300km of bike lanes, so it is the perfect way to go from one place to the other. On the weekends, a lot of people get their bikes and go on beautiful rides, like Vista Chinesa, that runs inside the forest, and when you reach the top the view is amazing. Electric bikes are very popular right now. They are a good alternative for the summer time, when it is too hot. You can still use a green transportation, but you don’t get too sweaty when you arrive at your destiny. Is the city safe? What are some tips for traveling to Rio for the first time? The security in Rio has improved a lot recently. It is a totally different city than it was 5 years ago. But, as every big city in the world, you must be careful. Always ask a local about the place you want to go. What is your favorite neighborhood? Leblon! It’s where I live and work. It really translates Rio’s life style, with the best restaurants at Rua Dias Ferreira, small cool stores only known by insiders, and the best beach to go and see beautiful people What is the best thing to bring back from Rio? What is the best thing to bring back from Rio? A bamboo clutch from Glorinha Paranaguá, a biquini from Vix, and a Cachaça (the famous liquor made from fermented sugarcane juice) to do your own Caipirinha drink at home. Tell me about your favorite shops… Via Flores, of course, is the best multi-brand store (I’m the buyer for the store!). For bikinis, ViX or Lenny. For leather clothes Patrícia Viera is amazing. Andrea Marques for women’s clothes. For accessories you should check on Virzi+De Luca necklaces. Olhar Brasil for unique pieces of decoration. What would you say is one Rio clothing staple? Biknis, with shorts and a t-shirt or with a white dress, you can go anywhere in Rio dressed like that.  The best hair spa? Care Body and Soul, there you have the best hair and make up artist, Mauro Bretas. The best place to do the Brazilian wax is at the spa in Hotel Marina, the good of thing about it, is that you´ll be distracted looking at the great view of Leblon Beach. Where are the best views of the city? Pão de Açucar, a very touristic spot, but it is worth the visit. Vista Chinesa, to go on a bike ride. Pedra Bonita, in São Conrado where the paraglides take off. And the Fasano pool to see Ipanema and Leblon beach while drinking a good glass of white wine. The best beach? Leblon to meet people, Barra to do sports, like surf and kite surf. Prainha and Grumari, to be alone. Your favorite hotel? Fasano at Ipanema and Hotel Santa Teresa. Best art galleries/museums? MAM (Museum of Modern art), Museu Chácara do Céu, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and Paço Imperial. Always check what exhibits are going on before you go. In 2013 we will have three new museums: MAR (Rio Museum of Art), MIS (Museum of Image and Sound) and Museu do Amanhã, a project by the “star architect” Santiago Calatrava. The must-dos? Go to a mass at Mosteiro São Bento and check the magnificent baroque architecture. Have breakfast at Confeitaria Colombo, Forte de Copacabana. Drink a beer at Bar Urca.Spend a weekend in Angra or Paraty. Go visit the art school at Parque Lage, and enjoy the public park in the foot of the Corcovado Mountain. There you go ! Thank you Joana ! As for me I can’t wait to show you the pictures of the fashion story we shot in Santa Teresa, a neighborhood you should definitely visit if you go to Rio ! Ok, kisses ! – More City Guides:
